Last week I was eavesdropping two doctors on a park bench. one said the next thing will be chicken pox. did not think any more about it till this morning on 3, advert came on warning about chicken pox and shingles which can kill adults.any one else heard any thing about this

Thanks for the nice feedback. I used to post a lot on here, a long time ago but I found the knee-jerk anti-Irish stuff and the general pride in ignorance in all senses quite off-putting. It's still good for actual football stuff but I tend to watch from the sidelines.

Interesting Chim. I wish I had more time to read. Much of my knowledge about Wellington is based on the comprehensive footnotes in the Flashman books. If Harry Flashman disliked Wellington, that's good enough for me. I looked up the origin of the phrase as I use the core concept of it sometimes with the young offenders I work with to try to get across the idea that they are not defined by where they are from. It's a simple but useful phrase to get that across.

Thanks Bamber, that's actually really interesting because virtually everything else Wellesley said made him out to be a right cunt.
I'd always thought that the comment was kind of like a diamond in a dog shit. He had (as you obviously already know) nothing good to say about the British troops who served and died doing what he ordered.
Fucking great art collection though if you know that story about Vitoria? Apsley House has one of the greatest art collections anywhere in the world and some of those pictures ended up being the core of The National Gallery (which is were I was only yesterday) having just finished the last of the Hilary Mantel trilogy and wanting to check out Christina, princess of Denmark. A bit of a fox actually.

By the way Hermit, if you ever indeed lived there I grew up in Clifton Rd as my mum was the warden of the sheltered housing block at number two. Terry Waite house.

Walk along Tottenham Court Road at one in the morning these days and it looks like a refugee camp full of British soldiers and the mentally ill. Most don't look or talk with foreign accents.
So yeah, I am either 'full-on North London Guardianista' or maybe someone who has a brother with mental health issues who he tries to help when dealing with Waltham Forest's loathsome mental health services and has seen personally how they have deteriorated over the last ten (at least) years.

Chim, i woinder about that with the health service, ditto the rail 'service'. Granted the latter is privatised but for the cost of rail tickets vs the service?...maybe it's because we just put up with stuff?
The mental health thing has een goin on long before Covid came along I think, live in Bristol and the amount of lost souls you see walking the streets has been on the noticeable increase for years now. It's a very sad state of affairs.

Strangely when I was last in hospital (depressingly recently) I overheard two doctors say that the next covid wave would be a tide of poor mental health. They are struggling to keep up with it as the government has cut all kinds of shit with their Cameron/Osbourne led ideology of austerity.
People with poor mental health are just turning up at A&E because there is simply nowhere else for them to go.

the thing about vaccines for coronaviruses are they they are only completely effective if given to enough (the case majority of) people i nth entire wold at the same time, and that just isn't possible, hence we will be in this cycle of seasonal peaks and pre-emptive booster shots, which will hopefully get more effective as time passes

I've had shingles twice but can't ever remember having had chickenpox but must have.
First time was the worst as I had no idea what it was to start with as just felt fluey rough for a few days. Once I felt better though this huge rash appeared overnight from the right hand side of the back of neck down over my shoulder blade and it hurt like hell - every time it was touched it was like getting an electric shock. The GP diagnosed it instantly.
Second time I got it early with Acyclovir and that did the trick on the rash before it got time to get going.

I had chicken pox when I was 45 and to be honest I've never felt so ill in all my life. Oh and the spots where everywhere and I mean everywhere! ( no link )

Had Shingles in 1965 - when I was 9 years old. My childhood has had far better days. No fucking about with a nancy-boy pox prelude either.
The pain was absolutely all-consuming, even if localized to a "figure of eight" area centred under my left armpit and extending to the centre of both my chest and back.
For a while - two weeks, if I remember correctly - it seemed it was serious enough for the local GP to visit daily, even at weekends, and always as the last case on his rounds, after which he went straight home to shower.
My brothers & sister (no link; and she's long dead anyway) were banned from bringing their friends round to the house after school, which pissed them off no end.
